[frame_left][/frame_left]We found this painted wood finial at an antiques show in Atlanta about 8 years ago. A finial is an end piece added to something as a decorative element. They come in all shapes, sizes and materials and can be found in places like door hinges, drapery hardware and even along the roof line of large buildings. We are unsure from where our find originated, but we think it may have sat on a large building or a ship. We fell in love with its patina, size and rustic nature, which happened to fit perfectly in our client’s home! The piece now sits on a fireplace hearth located in a large room.
When we accessorize a spacious room, we use a few large pieces over many small ones. This scale better suits the room, where smaller objects could get lost or look cluttered. The antique finial made a statement in our client’s home, and added visual interest to the fireplace. We love including antique pieces in our designs as they bring personality and history to a space. Especially with pieces like this one, they make you think about where it came from, how it was used, and what was happening around it before it came to us.
Do you have a favorite antique piece in your home? We’d love to hear about it!
