A fireplace is a popular focal point in a home and can range in style from cozy to elegant. Unfortunately, traditional styles can look like big black holes in a space if not planned well. Surrounds and mantles figure greatly into their design, whether you are looking for a heavily carved look or a simple, clean-lined style. In modern homes, we are seeing a trend toward linear fireplaces, which offer many design benefits. Their long, rectangular shape adds a contemporary look and can be a good option in smaller spaces. Gas varieties offer zero clearance to combustible surfaces, which means they can be surrounded by any material right up to the glass doors. Wood-burning options also exist if you are looking to bring the ambiance of a crackling fire to your space. In the project shown above, our clients were remodeling their whole condo with a modern aesthetic. The linear fireplace was the perfect fit for their living room. The surround was completed in a grey, stacked stone with a thick stone mantel to complement the contemporary look of the rest of the space. The linear fireplace also allowed the homeowners to hang their large television over the fireplace, rather than creating a second focal point in the room.
