Our Interior Design Inspiration: Adding Character to a Plain Room

When we visit a client’s home for the first time, we often hear the complaint that their rooms offer little in terms of character. Many homes are built as a series of plain rectangles, with little architectural detailing to boost visual interest. Our clients were faced with this situation in the dining area shown above. We brought character and functionality to their space by adding floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry, with lovely base and crown moldings. The inset doors and drawers enhance the simple lines of the cabinets, and the twist oil-rubbed bronze hardware complements the other finishes in the space. A glass insert in the door leading to the backyard, along with the center window, allows natural light to enter the room. We decided to frame the window with the cabinetry along with a window seat to highlight the lovely view. Finally, the window treatment, seat cushion, and pillows bring softness to the hard wall of cabinets. Now our clients’ dining area is a welcoming place, filled with visual interest and functionality too!
